Buying New Air Conditioning
5 Tips for Buying New Air Conditioning/Heating Systems
1. There are two major items to consider when purchasing a new air conditioning or heating system for your home. The first of these is choosing the right contractor to work with. If your system is not designed and installed properly it will cost you extra money. Find a contractor who has lots of experience and who has good referrals. The second issue is related to the first. Get the right size system for your home and the climate you live in. You need a system which has the correct capacity, not too little or too much. Having too much capacity is as bad as having too little. If you work with a competent and experienced contractor you will have no problems in this regard.
2. Find out if there are any local or national rebates or tax credits available. These can be substantial and can make or break your buying decision. At the present time, in 2010 until the end of the year the U.S. government is offering tax credits of up to $1,500. Also, you might find rebates or credits from your state or from a local utility company or possibly from a manufacturer.
3 Understand the applicable efficiency ratings. For air conditioning the efficiency ratings are in SEER, which means Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratings. The law requires a SEER rating of at least 13 on all units built since 2006, but to get the federal tax credit in 2010 you need a SEER of 16. The highest on the market today is 21, but of course higher efficiency means higher up-front costs. For heating systems, Annualized Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) is used. Heat pumps use two measures, HSPF or COE.
4 Ask about setting up periodic maintenance inspections. Most people offering serious advice to consumers recommend periodic inspections of heating and cooling systems. Your system might be just fine, but on the other hand it could have or be on the verge of having big problems that will cost much more to fix at a later time.
5 If you are considering cutting edge equipment or systems with lots of extra features you should seriously consider getting a maintenance contract.
